It is with profound grief that we announce Rene Garcia, Centro San Antonio Board Chair, passed away this Saturday surrounded by his wonderful family.  We send all our love and blessings to his friends and family as we wish them peace and consolation through this heartbreaking experience.

Rene Garcia was a longtime friend and staunch supporter of our organization as well as the entire downtown community. His tremendous impact has been felt far and wide. During his tenure as Vice President at Zachry Hospitality, he helped transform downtown through projects like the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts, oversaw the expansion of University Health Systems, and the installation of the iconic “Torch of Friendship,” a beacon of San Antonio warmth and hospitality.

As Centro Board Chair, Rene led the effort to create the Downtown Tomorrow Strategy, which will guide our collective effort over the next decade and beyond. His tenacious commitment and heartfelt belief in a prosperous, beautiful and humane future for our downtown neighborhood inspires us all. It is in that spirit that we will carry forward with this work and strive to honor his vision, generosity, kindness, and humility.
