Highjinks, smiles and winning moments are re-energizing downtown San Antonio a year after the area was quieted of employees and visitors due to the pandemic.

Centro San Antonio, the downtown advocacy group, is making everyone who throws away their trash feel like a champion. They installed a motion-detected noise animation device to trash cans and recycling containers throughout Legacy Park by the new Frost Tower. Each time a guest tossed waste in one of the containers, they were surprised with audio from an actual Spurs game. The group captured a few pure moments throughout late March and early April.

Liz Burt, Centro’s Director of Urban Activation and Play, said a group of stakeholders and creative makers to come up with more than 100 ideas to add more fun to the area. Centro worked with Derek Aguilar, of X-Managed, to bring the idea to life.

Judging by the blooper reel-worthy reactions Centro caught on a hidden camera, the idea was a hit. Some passersby had to toss three pieces of trash just to make sure they weren’t losing it. Others were so curious they took apart the trash can to figure out where the sound was coming from.
